Be Worthy of A Raise

When we do more than we are paid for, eventually we will be paid more for what we do. Zig Ziglar

While It may be true that you are not compensated well for what you do, or you may be long overdue for a raise, if you are not worthy of that raise you’re shooting yourself in the foot by asking. Your attitude, productivity, punctuality, ability to take initiative and your integrity are all vital towards your qualification for a pay increase. If you are not honoring your fulfillments to the best of your ability you can’t expect much in return; it’s only fair – what you put in is what you get out!

During this process, take the opportunity to improve on the necessary areas; for example, if you’re not always punctual then now is the time to show up not just on time but at least 15 minutes ahead of your shift. Perhaps doing a little extra work or volunteering to do something that adds value to the company; anything that you can do that sets you apart from other employees will give you the confidence needed as you ask for that raise.

In my experience as an employer I discovered that staff members who did not demonstrate a good work ethic were usually the ones that often approached me for a raise or pay advance, these types of workers did not last very long in my company. These are the types of employees that frequently move from job to job always wanting more for less the amount of responsibility than their co-workers. No employer wants people with dollar signs in their eyes working for them but instead, self motivated, dedicated, ambitous individuals that are an asset to the company not a liability.

No Excuses Action Plan

1. Asses your last performance review; write down areas in need of improvement. Ask your boss to hold you accountable for a specified period of time. Other options would be to assign a co-worker, friend or hire a coach

2. Enhance your skills by taking necessary courses or volunteer
